PROGRAMAS

History of the Spanish Bilingual Program
Bilingualism has been shown to provide positive cognitive effects and social benefits to the young and old. Spanish is the fourth most spoken language in the world, and it is the official first language of 20 countries.

In 2017, the Spanish Bilingual program began at the Coalbanks Elementary School in west Lethbridge with one kindergarten and one grade one class. The Spanish Bilingual program relocated to the NEW West Coulee Station Elementary School in the Fall of 2025 and is thriving. Elementary-level Spanish Bilingual programming is now available for kindergarten to grade five students who get numerous opportunities to learn and use language in meaningful and purposeful ways. The delivery of subject-area content, language instruction and cultural information often occurs concurrently, promoting effective language acquisition. Students divide their time evenly, studying 50 per cent in Spanish and 50 per cent in English.

The first Spanish Bilingual students started at G.S. Lakie Middle School in the fall of 2022. In the fall of 2024, Spanish Bilingual programming will be offered there for grade six, seven, and eight students. Spanish Bilingual programming at G. S. Lakie is designed to provide students with opportunities to improve their Spanish speaking, writing, reading and listening skills in a diverse set of contexts. Students receive both content and explicit language instruction in Spanish, and they have the opportunity to learn about and participate in cultural events that are important to the Spanish-speaking community throughout the school year.

In the fall of 2025, the first group of Spanish Bilingual students will be entering high school in Lethbridge, at Chinook Regional High School.

Creating a parent-led association to champion Spanish Bilingual programming in Lethbridge will help ensure cohesive and sustainable support for students and this program over the long term.

Updated for the 2025–2026 School Year
1. What is the Lethbridge Spanish Bilingual Program?
The Lethbridge Spanish Bilingual Program is a dual-language education program where students learn in both English and Spanish while meeting all Alberta curriculum outcomes. 5. Does my child need to speak Spanish to join?
No. No prior Spanish language experience is required for students entering Kindergarten or Grade 1.

6. Can my child join the program after Grade 1?
Students entering after Grade 1 may be able to join following an individual language assessment. This assessment helps determine if their Spanish skills are at a level that supports success in a bilingual classroom. Families interested in joining mid-program should contact the school to discuss options and schedule an assessment.

7. Do we need to speak Spanish at home?
No — you do not need to speak Spanish at home for your child to thrive in the Spanish Bilingual Program. Many families in the program do not speak any Spanish themselves.
Families can support their child’s learning simply by showing interest — asking about what they’re learning, listening to Spanish songs together, or reading bilingual picture books. The program community includes both Spanish-speaking families and those who are brand new to the language, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.

8. Is before- and after-school care available?
Yes. The YMCA offers on-site before and after-school care at West Coulee Station Elementary, making it easy for families enrolled in the Spanish Bilingual Program.
  • Care is available on regular school days and also on alternate Kindergarten days, providing full coverage for younger students.
  • Spaces are limited, so families are encouraged to register early through the YMCA.
For more information, contact the YMCA of Lethbridge or inquire at the school office.

9. What are the benefits of bilingual education?
Students in bilingual programs gain:
  • Enhanced problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
  • Deeper cultural awareness and empathy
  • Long-term cognitive benefits: strengthen memory, improve mental flexibility, and may help delay age-related cognitive decline and dementia later in life
  • Enhanced literacy and numeracy skills in both languages
  • Lifelong advantages in travel, study, and career opportunities

10. What if my child needs extra support learning in two languages?
Teachers use inclusive strategies and differentiated instruction to meet each student’s needs. Additional help is available through the Family School Liaison Counsellor, Student Support Worker, and learning-support team. Collaboration between home and school ensures every child can grow confidently in both languages.
